The Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 Fatty acids are commonly touted as “a good fat” yet many of us don’t understand exactly how or why they have such a positive impact on our health. These fatty acids are made up of three compounds: α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). All of these can be extracted from various natural sources like nuts, algae, plankton and fish oil to be made into capsule form where they can be found at any vitamin store. Despite all of the marketing material being pushed to the public regarding Omega-3, there is a lot of scientific evidence to merit the miracle claims that often accompany an advertisement.

Blood fat – These fatty acids can be used to lower triglyceride levels. This equates to a lower risk for heart disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis – The EPA and DHA components can ease stiffness and lessen joint pain. Additionally, these supplements can also aid many anti-inflammatory drugs.

Cancer – There is very little evidence that Omega-3 can fight cancer, but recent studies have shown that patients undergoing treatment for cancer showed quality of life improvements with Omega-3s.

Depression – Research shows that people taking Omega-3s have lower levels of depression/bipolar disorder due to an increase in the effectiveness of antidepressants.

Baby development – DHA testing continues to yield evidence that points to a positive impact in the visual and neurological development of babies.

Asthma – A diet high in Omega-3s lowers inflammation, as stated before, which is a main component in those suffering from asthma.

ADHD  – Studies show that Omega-3s can reduce the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and improve the mental skills of children.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia  – More research is being conducted, but Omega-3s may also safeguard against dementia and Alzheimer’s by reducing  gradual memory loss linked to aging.

There is constant new evidence surfacing to both support and repute some of these claims, but one thing is certain – Omega-3s have a positive impact on a person’s health. Even if a patient takes them to reduce swelling and daily pain, it can be a great compliment to regular Chiropractic treatment.
